The Importance of Knowing Where Your Property Ends and Your Neighbors' Begins

Surveyor

When you are planning to do work on your property such as clearing brush, cutting down trees, removing or adding a large amount of soil, erecting a fence or shed, putting up a basketball net… it is very important that you make sure you know where your property lines fall.

I often hear stories of residents who inadvertently encroached on their neighbor’s property.  Such encroachments can often lead to resentment, lawsuits and expensive restorations.

All properties in the Village were surveyed at one time and had their property corners marked, often with steel spikes.  Over time, the location of those corners can become concealed.  For a nominal fee a surveyor can locate the spikes or re-mark the corners and property lines potentially saving you money and heartache.

In addition, especially concerning clearing, filling and excavating, these operations are subject to Village Code and sometimes require a permit from the Village Planning Board.  Details can be found in section 95-3 of the Village Code.

The Village website has an excellent FAQ that covers many questions you might have concerning which types of projects do or do not need a permit from the Village.  The FAQ may be found HERE.
