Educational Event About Bears - Video Link

For those who were not able to attend the online presentation about bears from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (or were locked out due to the 100 person maximum), you can access the recording HERE.

The presentation has a lot of very good information about bears, what brings them to the area, how to stay safe, how to act in the event of an encounter, and how to prevent them from rummaging through your garbage.  One thing I found very interesting is that if we, as a community, worked harder to remove the things that attract bears to our area, the bears would stop coming around.  This includes:

  • Preventing them from accessing our garbage cans by either using bear proof cans or keeping them indoors until just before pickup.
  • Removing bird feeders, especially after April 1st each year.
  • Plus several other ideas that can be found HERE.
