Night Parking, Reflectors & Speeding

Stay Safe

Many of our Village residents reach out to me regularly to bring to my attention safety and other issues within the Village.  Today I'd like to share some of these with you and ask you to do your part to maintain safety and stay within our laws.

Night Parking - Not Permitted All Year Long in Wesley Hills

Village code, dating back to 2003, prohibits parking on any public street between the hours of 2:00am and 6:00am (https://www.ecode360.com/27914605).  Our Code Enforcement Officers and some residents have informed me that violations of our night parking law are taking place in some areas of the Village.  Please be aware that the Village does take enforcement of its laws seriously, has ticketed violations in the past, and will continue to do so.

The Village can issue temporary permits for overnight parking when need is shown (https://www.ecode360.com/27914620).

Reflectors - Be Seen at Night!

One of the most common complaints I hear from our residents is that people walk at night without reflectors.  They are rightly concerned that they will find themselves in an accident with a person who was nearly invisible to them.

Now that we have reached the time of year when it gets dark early, wearing reflective sashes, vests or reflective clothing is very important for the safety of those walking along our roads.  New York State has a great video online that demonstrates how effective reflectors can be - click HERE.  As a reminder, the Village provides up to 10 free reflectors per household which can be picked up at Village Hall during office hours.  Additional reflectors may be purchased at our cost of $2 each.  On request the Village will also provide larger numbers of reflectors to synagogues or other institutions that will make them available to their members.

Speeding - On Local Streets

Another common complaint I receive from residents is that people are speeding in their neighborhoods.  They are concerned for themselves and their children.  The odd thing about this issue is, often the speeders are the people who live in the neighborhood and their own children are on the very roads on which they are speeding.

Unfortunately, the Police do not have the manpower to conduct enforcement on side streets so it is up to us to make sure we follow the law and keep us all safe.  The few seconds time lost by driving at or under the speed limit is greatly outweighed by the damage speeding can cause.

Best regards,

Marshall Katz, Mayor
