Come See Our Village Hall Pumpkin!

Boma

Our thanks to Village resident and artist, Tjokorda Gde Arsa Artha, for carving a pumpkin to display at Village Hall.  Gde, who is originally from Bali, provided the following description of the Balinese mythologicial image he chose to carve:

"Boma is the son of the forest and is the representation of nature. In ancient Balinese mythology, Boma is the son of Dewa Wisnu and Dewi Pertiwi, the god of rain and the goddess of Earth.
One day when Wisnu was digging the earth in the form of Varaha, he encountered a beautiful earth goddess named Dewi Pertiwi. The encounter led to a union between Wisnu and Pertiwi, which produced a terrifying son named Boma. The figure of Boma created by this union was seen as the growth of vegetation or forest as a result of the earth receiving the rain.
The head figure of Boma functions as a guardian spirit of the community and is the protector of humanity from malevolent spirits."

I encourage you to come by Village Hall and take a picture with the display.  If you send the pictures to me, I'll post them on the Village website.  While you are here, stop in and say hello to our friendly Village staff.
