Weathering the Storm
The following are tips
provided by Orange & Rockland Utilities.
WEATHERING
THE STORM
Q. What should a person do in the event of a
bad storm?
A. Today, storms rarely come as a surprise
because of up-to-date weather forecasting technology. But sometimes they can be more severe than
expected. With reasonable preparation,
residents can weather storm-related power outages with little inconvenience.
ADVANCE PREPARATIONS
- Have a portable radio and a supply of fresh
batteries on hand.
- Store flashlights and extra batteries in a place
easily reached by everyone.
- Keep a list of emergency numbers near the
telephone. Include with the list
your utility’s toll-free customer service number.
- Maintain an emergency supply of food that does
not require refrigeration. Check
freshness dates and replace as necessary.
- If you have an all-electric kitchen, have
another method of cooking available.
For Safety’s sake, never use charcoal indoors.
- Know the location of your electric circuit box
and how to switch the power off/on.
You may have to check to see if your problem is internal to your
home.
WHEN A STORM THREATENS
- Check your supply of batteries for the radios
and flashlights.
- Double-check your emergency phone number list
- Fill several clean containers with water for
drinking, cooking and washing.
- If your water supply is provided by electrically
driven well pumps, fill your bathtub with water in order to provide a
temporary water supply for flushing toilets.
- Set refrigerators and freezers to the coldest
settings. Then, if the power goes
out, the food will last longer.
- Listen to your local radio station for weather
information. (103.9 FM in this
area)
IF THE LIGHTS DIM OR FLICKER
- Unplug sensitive electronics, such as computers,
security systems or microwaves.
- Disconnect motor-drive appliances – air
conditioners, refrigerators, etc.
- If lightening is predicted, unplug televisions
sets and other equipment with outside antennas or connections.
- Leave appliances off until full power is restored.
IF THE POWER GOES OUT
- Report the outage to your electric utility and
give us as much detail as possible, including your address and nearest
cross street. Also helpful would
be the number on the pole nearest your home. (Pole numbers are installed at eye level
on a metal tab mounted on the street side of the pole)
- If you have difficulty getting through, please
be patient. Many others are
probably trying to do the same.
- Don’t touch any wire or cable that has fallen to
the ground or is dangling from a house or pole.
- Stay tuned to local stations (103.9 FM in Rockland County) on your battery-powered
radio for power restoration announcements.
As part of O&R’s Storm Plan operations, we provide these
stations with continuous updates.
- Like all utilities, O&R first makes those
repairs that will restore the largest numbers of customers at once, and
next works on damaged equipment serving smaller groups of customers or
individuals. Please be patient if
you see trucks pass your location without making localized repairs. The crew is likely working on a major
line.
- Once your power is restored, don’t forget to
reconnect and reset all the electric appliances you had adjusted or unplugged
earlier.
