Solid Waste and Recycling News

(November, 2004)

I am please to report that we have been doing a lot better with our recycling efforts. According to the latest report we received from the Rockland County Solid Waste Authority we are in the top six or seven communities. Over the three month period ending the last day of March we had over 49 tons of recyclables collected. We still can do a lot better! Whenever I drive through the Village on Wednesday, I am always surprised to see that so many people do not take the trouble of putting their recyclables out in the blue and green bins that have been provided to us by the Authority "free of charge".

There are so many reasons to recycle that I feel it would be insulting to the folks who live here to keep reminding them of environmental, pollution and health issues. According to the last census we are a community of highly educated families and I am sure we all know the importance of "Recycling".

Let me spend a moment on the economic end of Recycling. In order to make it convenient for us to recycle paper and commingled bottles and cans every Wednesday, we had to increase our contractual relation with our contractor by over thirty thousand dollars a year. Translate that into budget dollars it represents about 4% of your entire tax dollars.
